I entered a competition recently to paint an African themed image. I did a bunch of research and after eliminating the trope ideas that came to mind I came across this story about a river god with the head of a fish and the body of a snake. The river god Nyami Nyami was very important in African legends and stories both revered and feared. A great flood occurred during the time they will building a dam and it was said that Nyami Nyami's wrath had incurred the tragedy.
I had a really fun time doing the image of an elder regaling the tale to others sitting around a fire. It was a unique and fun process that I haven't done before and I think the result was pretty. It still carries some of that traditional look but is much more refined and detailed than I am able to achieve normally with just watercolor. Process below:
